Meet Underbool, Victoria. Deep in the Mallee, 50km west of Ouyen. Beautiful, resilient, and right now — hopeful.
The Underbool Hotel opened around 1925 and served this community for over 90 years. The only pub this town has ever known. Weddings. Wakes. Harvest celebrations. Every milestone this community ever had — it happened in that pub.
Then came the fires. Then the slow decline. In December 2016, the doors closed for good.
The community waited. The building sat empty. Buyers came and went — deals that fell apart, promises that faded.
Word around town is that tradies have been spotted and something is happening.
So now this century-old pub looks like there is a future.
This isn’t just an Underbool story. It’s happening all over regional Australia.
When a pub dies, something in a town dies with it. Let’s hope this pub comes back to life SOON.
