Shamrock Hotel

The Shamrock Hotel in Rochester was built by local identity T. W. McMaster, a man who left his mark on the town long before the bricks went up. In 1911, he bought the original 1871 Shamrock and the neighbouring Harp Hotel and set about building the grand red-brick hotel we see today.
Double-storey cast iron verandahs stretch over both footpaths, and McMaster’s name still sits across the facia, 112 years on. The hotel has been closed at times, then refurbished and reopened, but the presence of McMaster’s vision hasn’t faded. Step inside, and the echoes of generations—pints poured, poker games played, stories swapped—still hang in the air.
112 years. One hotel. Rochester’s landmark still standing.
